Adaptive Dance

Discover the Joy of Adaptive Dance for Neurodivergent Kids

August 28, 20243 min read

When it comes to finding activities that truly embrace and celebrate our neurodivergent kids' unique abilities it can be challenging to find the right fit.
But what if there was a flexible, inclusive form of dance designed to accommodate any disability, ensuring every student can participate, regardless of their need?
The good news is if you’re looking for a way to help your child express themselves, build confidence, and connect with others in a supportive environment, adaptive dance might be just what you’ve been searching for.

What is Adaptive Dance?

Adaptive dance is a form of dance that’s specifically designed to be inclusive of all abilities.

Whether a child uses a wheelchair, has limited mobility, or simply needs a space to move and groove without the pressure of following strict instructions, adaptive dance makes it possible for every child to participate and have fun.

Jasmine Matthew, a seasoned recreational therapist with over 20 years of experience, is a passionate advocate for adaptive dance. She’s the founder of Jasmine’s Beat, an adaptive dance company that welcomes students of all ages and abilities.

Jasmine’s experience spans across various settings—from pediatric rehabilitation to schools—and she’s dedicated to making dance accessible for everyone.

Why Adaptive Dance is a Game-Changer

Adaptive dance isn’t just about learning steps or perfecting choreography. It’s about creating a space where kids can express themselves freely and feel included, no matter their abilities. The focus is on fun, movement, and creativity—giving kids the freedom to explore their own way of dancing.

Every child is different, and adaptive dance recognizes that. Whether your child needs extra breaks, prefers to observe before joining in, or has specific sensory needs, classes are tailored to meet them where they are. Jasmine and her team prioritize building relationships with each student, ensuring that every child feels comfortable and supported.

Beyond the joy of movement, adaptive dance helps kids develop a range of skills, from social and emotional growth to cognitive and physical development. It’s a holistic approach to learning through play, where kids can gain confidence, make friends, and discover new ways to express themselves.

Getting Started with Adaptive Dance

If you’re curious about introducing your child to adaptive dance, Jasmine’s Beat offers online classes every Saturday morning in partnership with Flow Recreation Therapy. These classes are accessible from anywhere, and you can choose to join a single session or commit to an 8-week course. For a more personalized experience, private online lessons are also available.

Not sure if it’s the right fit? Jasmine offers a free trial class so your child can test the waters. Sometimes, all it takes is that first session to spark a newfound love for dance!

Adaptive dance is more than just an activity—it’s a celebration of movement, creativity, and inclusion. It’s a space where every child, no matter their abilities, can find joy and connection. If you’re looking for a way to help your child shine, consider giving adaptive dance a try. You might just find it’s the perfect fit for your family!
