Teaching Children Healthy Ways to Cope with Stress and Manage Emotions

This blog post will outline five strategies on how to help children cope with stress and manage emotions in healthy ways.

1. Open Communication

By using open communication with your child and practicing active listening skills while listening to your child without judgment, you can model healthy coping skills to your child.

2. Mindfulness and Relaxation Techniques

Children can learn to use deep breathing, progressive muscle relaxation, and other mindfulness tools to destress during a tense moment or situation. There are many scripts online that can be used with children.

3. Physical Activity

Physical activity can be anything from taking a walk to playing sports. Exercise is a natural remedy for stress for all people and has many other benefits too. If your child doesn't like exercise for the sake of exercise make a game out of it. You can play tag, soccer, or any other game.

4. Healthy Eating Habits

A balanced diet enhances emotional regulation. A diet high in excessive sugar and processed foods may lead to mood swings and dysregulated stress levels.

5. Creative Expression

When I was a child this was my main way to destress. My mom always knew how I was feeling by how I played the piano. I could play the same song and make it sound completely different based on how I was feeling. Creative expression can also be done through visual art, theater, or other instruments.
