What is Music Therapy?

Music Therapy is creating a community for people who have no community. Music Therapy is helping people gain social skills in order to be successful in social settings. Music Therapy is alleviating pain and stress during medical procedures. Music Therapy is cultivating confidence and courage to live the life you want to live.

Music Therapy is the clinical and evidence-based use of music interventions to accomplish individualized goals within a therapeutic relationship by a credentialed professional who has completed an approved music therapy program.

Music Therapists work in psychiatric hospitals, rehabilitative facilities, medical hospitals, outpatient clinics, day care treatment centers, agencies serving persons with developmental disabilities, community mental health centers, drug and alcohol programs, senior centers, correctional facilities, nursing homes, and hospice programs.

Music Therapists use improvisation, receptive music listening, songwriting, lyric discussion, music and imagery, and music performance to address goals in emotional well-being, physical/mental health, social functioning, communication abilities, and cognitive skills.
